SCHOOL DAYS
School days, school days
Dear old golden rule days
Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic
Taught to the tune of the hickory stick
This year, my two oldest grandchildren are in Kindergarten and 4K! One thing that is common among family members of my generation and younger is mandatory school attendance Kindergarten through 12th grade, and frequently, graduating with a degree from a four-year college. We also have some who have gone on to doctorates - Dr. Kevin Churchwell, Dr. Deana LaRew Serrano, and Zachary Gautier, PhD. If there are others I have missed please excuse my forgetfulness!
This emphasis on education was not always the case of our parents and
previous generations. For example, my
dad had an 8th grade education, not finishing his 9th
grade year, undoubtedly because his help was required on the farm, especially
since he was the only boy in his family.
This post will be heavy in graphics, light in text, since they are
pretty self-explanatory.
1933-34, Everton, MO High School - Lois Larew is on the right end, back row, Kermit Larew is on the right end, middle row
March 20, 1948, Kermit Larew - Diesel Engine Maintenance Course, (good thing Kim didn’t arrive any earlier, being born on March 31 of that year!)
1991 - Larew girls Gail, Lois & Georgia at old Carlock School
Calvin Churchwell – 1927-28, First Grade
1933, Freshmen class including Richard Churchwell and his future bride Viola Griswold
In a taped
interview Calvin talked about living in the basement of the high school so they didn’t
have to walk to school and back home every day.
Their jobs included getting water from the nearby well, firing up the wood-burning
stove on cold days, and cleaning up after school. My mom also talked about the boys living at
the school in her diaries.
1939 - Calvin Churchwell, School letter in Basketball
Mildred Churchwell – School Life, Pet Teachers and Teachers’ Pets (Harold Nuttleman & I)
1941, Mildred Elizabeth Churchwell Larew - Graduation
