School days, school days Dear old golden rule days Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic Taught to the tune of the hickory stick This year, my two oldest grandchildren are in Kindergarten and 4K! One thing that is common among family members of my generation and younger is mandatory school attendance Kindergarten through 12 th grade, and frequently, graduating with a degree from a four-year college. We also have some who have gone on to doctorates - Dr. Kevin Churchwell, Dr. Deana LaRew Serrano, and Zachary Gautier, PhD. If there are others I have missed please excuse my forgetfulness! This emphasis on education was not always the case of our parents and previous generations. For example, my dad had an 8 th grade education, not finishing his 9 th grade year, undoubtedly because his help was required on the farm, especially since he was the only boy in his family.
